Enhancing

An attempt takes 2.4 s, costs tier × rarity × (N+1) coins and 3 × (N+1) Voidshards, and lands with a chance of 1 − N × 0.06, never under 20%. Miss, and the piece falls back to +0 — which is the whole reason the totals below are so much larger than the price list. Gear goes to +30.

Why the top of the ladder reads like that

Chances fall by 6% a step until they bottom out at 20% from +14 on, so everything above that is the same coin flip repeated. A miss returns the piece to +0 there too — the drop does not soften just because the odds have flattened out. Every one of those flips is therefore priced with the entire climb beneath it. The odds of one clean run from +0 to +30 are 1 in 5.7e+14 — about 5.7e+14 attempts at the bottom rung alone.

Which is the polite way of saying that +30 is a ceiling, not a goal. Past about +6 nobody climbs without protection scrolls, and a scroll turns each miss into losing one + instead of the whole ladder — that is the difference between the figures above and a number a player could plan around. Tick the scroll box to see it.

The table above is steel, Normal, Enhancing 1 — the controls change everything underneath it.

Why the totals run away at the top. A step that lands 40% of the time takes two and a half tries on average — and every miss replays the entire ladder beneath it. So the attempts column grows like the reciprocal of a product of chances, which by +13 is not a little more work but a different order of magnitude.

What this leaves out. Coins and shards only. From +5 a Colossus core can stand in for the shards; that trade is priced on the core's page and is not folded in. XP is paid on a miss too, so the grind does raise your Enhancing level while you pay for it — at 99 a 40% try reads about 48%.
